“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets.
I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
Mathew 5:17
Over time, there has been a lot of controversy and complication surrounding the subject of GRACE as relating to the fulfilment of the law. Most times, people assume and conclude that grace is the substitute for law or GRACE is the absence of the law. This conceptualization has led many astray at the detriment of the body of Christ thereby causing the progresses in error and in sin by many because they have been made to believe that you can live your life anyhow you like because of what Christ has done. “Christ has paid for it all in advance” they say. The finished work of Christ covers you including the wrongs you have not done yet.
Although there are elements of truth in this concept but there has to be a balance. It is important to note that the pain, suffering and death of Christ would be in vain if all He did was to make us to continue living in our sins. Paul wrote:
“shall we continue in sin that grace may abound”
Romans 6:1
What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!
Romans 6:15
It is germane to understand that we are not lawless Christians (as relating to moral values and standards). Grace is not the absence of the law. Rather grace empowers you to obey and fulfil the law conveniently without stress. Many think the law is evil. “The law is good” Paul protested!
‘Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.
Romans’ 7:12
But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;
1 Timothy 1:8
In times past, people find it very difficult to keep the law. In fact, it was practically impossible to keep the commandments. So now what God did was to derive another means for us to keep His word by bringing us to himself and helping us to keep His word. David said “thy word have I hid in my heart, that I may not sin against you.”
Moreover, Christ appeared as Grace (the law in disguise) to bring us close to the father once again through reconciliation and he stablishing a fellowship as a product of relationship between God and man. He came to free us from the bondage of the law and gave us His grace to do his will conveniently. Though we may struggle at some point like He struggled at Gethsemane but His Grace through His word will be sufficient for us. Paul wrote
So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.’
So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.’
So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.’
Acts 20:32
In conclusion, you are not supposed to live anyhow you want but anyhow God wants. Grace is not the license for you to live a promiscuous life. That life was not yours in the first place. You had no life. Christ gave His life for you. The life you call yours is the life of God in you. So, you will give an account of how you live. Don’t get it twisted and please be guided. God bless your heart!
